Luke started contra dancing in Ithaca, NY about a decade ago (back when he was Luke Donev, before
he married a girl he met at that contra dance). Ithaca is where he started calling as well,
beginning mostly as a way to share the dances he was having so much fun writing. His choreography
and calling have built on and fed into each other over the years, each helping the other develop.
He calls all over the country, but is based in Vermont where he is a teacher. His home dance is
the Mad Robin Callers Collective, which he helped start with many friends, including Catapult alum
Mary Wesley.
He enjoys sharing his love of dancing with others; calling at schools, weddings, weekly and monthly
dances, and festivals. He sees the caller's responsibility as facilitating the best possible time
for all the dancers. Organizers and dancers describe his calling as fun, warm, humorous, and helpful;
and enjoy the mix of dances from chestnuts to new compositions. You may have already danced some of
his dances, as other callers have collected and helped spread them, but he always has new material.
He looks forward to partying with you in Atlanta, and wants to thank everyone who helps make
Catapult happen; from the organizers to the participants who travel there and make it a success.
